I'm going to take a break from social media for a bit. So here's a long post before I go. The shootings in Ferguson are tragic and reprehensible. And they couldn't have come at a worse time.
Awful timing, really. Right as the Department of Justice releases evidence of system racism in the ferguson department. Right as the police chief resigned. If felt like we may be sitting on the precipice of a shift in conversation about those who police us and then a lone gunman went and shifted the whole conversation with four bullets.
I'm unbelievably angry at that person. Violence is not a solution. Those men have families. Education and progress are the keys to building a less racist police force. Not bullets.
I'm angry at the people blaming peaceful protests for the actions of few. The same people who insist that "not all white people are racist and those kids at SAE OU are misguided" are the same that will put the blame for the actions of few on the shoulders of many.
It's despicable. Two men were shot and you spend your time shouting that it was the fault of those seeking justice.
And at this point lets identify the Mike Brown situation for what it is: the final flames that set the pot to boiling. Maybe Officer Wilson was 100% justified. Maybe Mike Brown was absolutely charging him. Let's say that's the case.
Now let's shift the analogy to something white people riot about: Football.
Say your team has been getting bad calls all game in the Superbowl. It's fairly obvious that the refs have a serious bias towards the other team. In fact, they've even found emails between the refs making fun of the other team. So the refs have been screwing over your team all game.
Finally. The final call of the game. Pass interference. It's the deciding call of the game. Now.
Maybe he did it. It kind of looks like he did it. But this is the culmination of screwy call after screwy call after being disenfranchised and abused and demeaned for the entire game.
The fans take to the streets. And flip over cars. As they are known to do when their sports teams lose. The rhetoric online becomes "look at these savages. This won't bring your team a SUPERBOWL win. Just shut up about."
That's pretty much where we are at. And it's sad.
It's sad all around. It's sad that officers are being gunned down for the actions of other officers. It's sad that a twelve year old can be killed for playing with a fake gun. It's sad that people use excuses for an individual who is part of a majority but then associate the acts of a minority individual with their entire race.
It's sad that our human brothers and sisters are being torn apart from each other by lines we've all drawn in the sand.
Try to understand each other.
Try to love each other.
Peace.
